Dear Members and Friends

17 April 2008

Dear Members and Friends,

The New Zealand Centre for Photography Trust Board (“the Board”) which publishes the New Zealand Journal of Photography has responsibilities not only to the Journal, our Members and the photographic community as a whole, but to its collection which has been built up over a number of years.  While the Board can look back on many accomplishments since its foundation into 1985, it has not been able to find a permanent home which would enable it to preserve the collection and make it available as a resource to the community.

The Board is actively seeking a home for the collection but its resources are such that it cannot focus on that task and continue to publish the Journal to the standards which you, as members, rightfully expect.  While the Board is proud of the Journal and the enormous contribution by David Langman as its Managing Editor in creating a publication which is both readable and scholarly, the Board has reluctantly concluded that our first priority is to secure the  safety of the collection.  As a result, the Board has decided to suspend the publication of the Journal until it has achieved that goal.

While the Board is happy to return unused portions of subscriptions if requested, it would ask at this stage that members refrain from doing so as the Board would like to see the continuation of the Journal after moves to make the Collection safe and accessible are completed.

We are grateful for the support of the Centre’s members and hope that you will continue to support the Board’s efforts to make this collection available to all New Zealanders for years to come.

Yours faithfully
Peter Ratner, Chairman
